Q. How do I know when my transmission needs to be serviced?

A. When the fluid begins to change from a clean red color to a darker color, or every 20-25 thousand miles.

bullet

Q. How do I check the transmission fluid level?
A. Always check the fluid level with the engine running (except Honda), the transmission in "park" (except Dodge products which should be in neutral with the emergency brake applied), and with the engine at operating temperature.   Remove the dipstick and wipe with a rag. Insert the stick fully and remove. Look at both sides of the stick to verify the same indication.  Repeat the process.

bullet

Q. Will it hurt to overfill the transmission?
A. In a word, no!  Although, it is possible that gross overfilling can cause the fluid to be subjected to moving parts and become aerated which could cause abnormal operation.  You may also notice leaks that ordinarily would not occur.

bullet

Q. Will overfilling "blow" seals?
A. In a word, no!  The transmission case is vented preventing pressure buildup in normally un-pressurized areas.  Severe overfilling can raise the fluid level such that the transmission may lose fluid through the vent or leak from seals that are above the normal fluid level, but the fact remains that the seals that are under pressure and those that are not will not change because of the fluid level.

bullet

Q. Why does the transmission fluid change to a dark brown or a blackish color when it was just changed recently?
A. The reason it changes color so quickly is that the red dye is temperature related, and if your fluid is changing color quickly, then the transmission is overheating for some reason, possibly slippage in the transmission, or lack of lubrication.   If you have this problem then it is time to have it checked out by an independent shop in your area.

bullet

Q. My transmission is giving me problems. Does that mean I need a new one?
A. Not at all. In many cases an external problem can be repaired INEXPENSIVELY and efficiently!

bullet

Q. I Have a "CHECK ENGINE" light on. Could this indicate a transmission problem?
A. Yes it could. Bring the vehicle down to Jimmy Upchurch Transmission so we can access the onboard transmission control computer to see if any codes have been stored in memory that indicate this.

bullet

Q. Are there other things that can go wrong with my car that can affect my transmission also?
A.
Yes, with today's electronic engine components, and transmission parts, there can often be a problem with the electronics in other operating areas of your car that will cause a poor performance in your transmission.   That is why we need more technically trained employees today.   We also have purchased state of the art equipment, including several electronic scanners that will help in the correct diagnosis of your transmission and other electrical problems.    Check for a modern well equipped shop in your area when you need to have work done.

bullet

Q. I've heard so many horror stories about transmission shops. How can I pick a reputable shop in my area?
Most reputable shops have some affiliation with one or more trade organizations that offer nationwide warranty programs and/or technical assistance.

bullet

Q. You rebuilt my transmission and I don't like how it shifts! What can you do?
         A. We will be happy to re-check our work, as it is possible for something to have gone wrong, and if it has we will repair it as quickly as possible.

bullet

Q. I had my car serviced at another member shop and it's not right. Can you do it for free?
A. We're sorry, but your warranty is only good at the original shop unless you are not in their area and the car is not drivable.

bullet

Q. What about dealers opposed to aftermarket parts? Should I be concerned about this?
A. Absolutely! There are good quality parts available through both channels. Jimmy Upchurch Transmission only uses parts that meet or exceed the original manufacturers specifications.

bullet

Q. What is a "shift kit?"
A. The kit is an aftermarket service pack that has been researched and developed to compensate for design deficiencies discovered in a particular transmission.  In most cases, the kit improves the quality of shifts, increases the internal pressure that operates the unit, and provides better lubrication.

bullet

Q. I ride with a friend to work, but get home after you close. Can I pick up my car after normal hours?
A. Usually is it No Problem for you to pick your car up after hours, but Please speak to one of our representatives to make sure we can accommodate your individual needs. We will do all we can to help.

bullet

Q. I need transmission work, but am short on cash. Do you have house accounts?
A. We're sorry, but we do not offer personal house accounts. However we honor most major credit cards.

bullet

Q. How can I make my transmission last longer?
A. "Don't ignore them."  Check the fluid level and condition periodically, repair any leaks/problems promptly, service the unit on a regular basis, and add an auxiliary cooler if the vehicle is used for towing, commercial, or high ambient temperature climates.  Some units should have a shift kit installed.  Synthetic fluid may benefit some applications.  Check with your local ATRA shop for their advice to your specific application and needs.

bullet

Q. How long does a transmission normally last?
A. There is no accurate answer to that question.  The mileage or time of use before major problems occur will vary greatly, and therefore, I don't see a correlation between mileage and expected transmission failure.  It is not unusual that the first few years after a newly designed transmission hits the road, that early failures occur.  But, in later years with updates to the original design, the units become more reliable.  The three major factors in the life expectancy are periodic maintenance, maintaining proper fluid level, and driving habits.
